The handful of printer settings that decide whether your labels come out crisp or blank.
BeamLabel works with any standard thermal label printer, but thermal printers are fussy about a few settings. Get these right once and you’ll never think about them again. Get them wrong and you’ll chase blank or doubled labels all night — so this page is worth five minutes before your first show.
What kind of printer you need
A direct-thermal label printer — the kind that prints without ink or toner by heating special thermal labels. Almost every label printer sold for shipping and small-business use is one of these. They come in two flavors, both fine:
- Roll-fed — labels on a roll, the most common setup.
- Fanfold — labels in a folded stack.
Most run at 203 dpi, which is exactly what BeamLabel targets.
Install the manufacturer’s real driver
This is the most important step, and the one most often skipped.
Install the official driver from your printer manufacturer — not a generic driver, and not a system “AirPrint”-style automatic one. Generic and AirPrint drivers frequently misread the label size, which is a leading cause of blank labels and multi-label spitting. The manufacturer’s driver knows your printer’s real geometry and talks to it correctly.
- Download the driver for your exact printer model from the manufacturer’s website.
- Install it, then restart the app so it sees the new printer.
- In BeamLabel’s Settings → Printer, select the printer by its real model name (e.g. the manufacturer entry), not a generic “thermal printer” or AirPrint entry.
If the only option you see is a generic or AirPrint one, install the real driver first — it’s the fix for most print-quality complaints.
Set the paper size to match your labels
In your operating system’s printer settings (not just in BeamLabel), set the printer’s default paper/stock size to match the labels you’ve loaded — 4×6, 4×2, and so on. Then set the same size in BeamLabel’s Settings.
When the physical label, the OS printer setting, and the app all agree, the slip fills the label perfectly. A mismatch anywhere is the classic cause of a slip that’s cut off, shrunk into a corner, or fanned across several labels.
Dial in darkness (density)
Most thermal printers have a darkness or density setting in their own software or driver. If prints come out faint, turn it up.
- It lives with the printer, not in BeamLabel — open your printer’s utility app or driver preferences, find Darkness (or Density), and raise it until text is solid black without smearing.
- Make sure your labels match the printer — direct-thermal labels for a direct-thermal printer. The wrong stock prints faint or blank no matter the darkness.
Calibrate after a roll change
Thermal printers use a sensor to find the gap between labels. After you load a new roll — especially a different size or brand — the printer may need to calibrate so it knows where each label starts and ends. Skipping this is a common cause of prints creeping out of position or the printer feeding a blank label between prints.
Calibration is usually a button-hold on the printer itself (check your printer’s manual for the exact sequence) or a “calibrate” option in its driver. Do it once after every roll swap and alignment stays clean.
Prefer USB over wireless
If your printer supports both, a USB connection is more reliable for live-show printing than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Wireless printers can drop to sleep between sales and wake up slowly — which, on some models, shows up as a batch of labels arriving late or at once. USB keeps the printer awake and responsive to every sale the instant it closes.
Quick pre-show checklist
- Real manufacturer driver installed and selected — not generic or AirPrint.
- OS paper size and BeamLabel size both match the loaded labels.
- Darkness set so text is solid black.
- Calibrated since the last roll change.
- Connected over USB where possible.
- A clean Test print before you go live.
